The revamp created a seamless experience between sending and signing electronic documents — measured with Google's HEART metrics and confirmed by DocuSign's continued market leadership.
Role: UX Lead
Overview
DocuSign, a leading provider of electronic signature technology and digital transaction management services, sought to revamp its user interface to elevate the user experience. Ryan led this transformative endeavor, focusing on redesigning the application to streamline the service and enhance user interaction. The goal was to develop a high-level strategic plan that re-conceptualized the service, ensuring alignment among all stakeholders.
Role
As the UX Lead, Ryan was instrumental in the comprehensive redesign of DocuSign. His role involved close collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including a Creative Director, a Director of Strategy, and an accounts team. The team followed a user-centered design process, ensuring the user was at the forefront from day one.
Challenges
The previous application had a variety of features, but there was an opportunity to improve their integration and streamline navigation for a more seamless user experience. Given DocuSign's status as a leader in the industry, tackling these challenges was a significant undertaking.
Process
The team conducted competitive analysis and engaged in iterative design processes, allowing for continuous improvement. Daily check-ins among team members facilitated the identification of opportunities for enhancement. Ryan redesigned the document signing process from scratch, paying attention to features like envelopes for larger groups of documents, catering especially to the real estate industry. He also contributed to the redesign of under-the-hood settings and preferences, which, while less visible, are vital for usability.
Results
The successful revamp of DocuSign's application marked a significant milestone in its evolution, creating a seamless experience between sending and signing electronic documents. The redesigned interface exceeded user expectations, offering an intuitive experience. Measures of success included Google's HEART metrics, with happiness and delight being key features of the design. Ultimately, DocuSign's continued market leadership confirmed the effectiveness of the approach.
Takeaway
A critical lesson learned was the importance of aligning computer systems with real-world processes. Understanding that signing contracts is a familiar legal procedure for users, Ryan utilized natural mapping — an essential usability principle — to create an experience that was easily understandable and had a low learning curve. This approach ensured that the redesign was not only functional but also user-friendly, reinforcing DocuSign's commitment to excellence and innovation in the digital transaction management landscape.
