Overview

While at Oracle, Ryan served in a hands-on managerial (player-coach) capacity, where he not only led but actively contributed to the design of three pivotal product suites within the Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) segments — Integration Cloud, Visual Builder Cloud Suite, and Stream Analytics — incorporating seven distinct products. His role was multifaceted, encompassing the establishment and leadership of a design organization. He managed and mentored a versatile team of US and European personnel, including managers, and a Center for Design Excellence in Prague, CZ.

Challenge

The inherent complexity of coordinating and harmonizing diverse design elements across a broad spectrum of products posed substantial challenges. Synthesizing and integrating various user experiences into Oracle's established frameworks required meticulous planning and execution, ensuring that each product met the high standards of design excellence and adhered to a user-centered approach.

Approach

A holistic, user-centered design process was crucial, with a strong emphasis on aligning the products with customer needs, informed by extensive user research. Establishing cross-disciplinary relationships, guided by agile and scrum methodologies, played a vital role in aligning design objectives with business goals, which were measured via KPIs. Ryan was also instrumental in expanding Oracle's Redwood design system to create a common design language across stakeholders, which enhanced efficiency and speed in product development.
